The International Surface Event (TISE) 2020 was buzzing from the moment the exhibit hall opened. The event brought together three shows: SURFACES, StonExpo/Marmomac, and TileExpo. Whether you were a regular exhibitor or a first-timer to the show, TISE delivered dazzling products, chances to make new connections, competitions, and a full slate of educational sessions.
Exhibitors’ spaces at the Mandalay Bay were packed with opportunities to demonstrate and show off their products. Small lounge areas offered intimate opportunities to learn from associations and brands. The WFCA booth offered Lounge and Learn sessions for attendees to hear about new initiatives, such as efforts to help improve the installation crisis.
The Mohawk VIP party lit up the show floor with an exciting multi-stage social experience for attendees that offered incredible music, interspersed with opportunities for networking in the company's handsome space.
The new Tech Hub had a great launch at TISE 2020, and at next year’s show, the Tech Hub will be prominently placed on the main aisle of the show floor.
The quartet of interior vignettes created at the Style Hub at The DISH—a new three-stage show feature—offered showgoers a first look at the newest colors, textures, and surface trends for 2020 and beyond with materials featured by Shaw Floors, Anderson Tuftex, CoreTec, and Iris US. The vignettes were created by TV personality and interior designer Jennifer Farrell. Craig Conover from Bravo TV's Southern Charm provided pillows from his lifestyle brand, Sewing Down South, for the vignettes. Both celebs made numerous appearances at the Hub conversing with attendees.
To the delight of the crowd, The Natural Stone Institute’s Women in Stone group participated in the Amazing Race—an interactive journey through the Natural Stone Pavilion. Participants grouped into teams and encountered challenges, learned natural stone trivia, and networked. Vendors and exhibitors were ready with clues about resources and new products, and what makes them special in this evolving industry. Along their journey, the women also had to navigate a few roadblocks. It was a fun new way for participants to engage in education and networking.
The National Installer of the Year Competition had its second stellar year and and proved to be an irresistible draw to attendees, who kept returning to the competition site to watch the competitors’ progress over the days of the event. The winners' ceremony on the show’s final day drew a great supportive crowd.
Recapping TISE 2020, show director Dana Hicks said: “The show floor was busy, busy, busy, all three days of the event. Everyone we spoke to, from the exhibitors and associations to the attendees, were all amazed at the amount of people, the quality of the connections, the products they were discovering, the education offerings—just an incredible event that brought the whole industry together once again!”
Overall attendance was up 3% over TISE 2019, and it was clear on the show floor and to all those in attendance that the industry was there in full force and eager to find the resources for the new year.
The sales office on the show floor was packed daily with exhibitors, and 80% of next year's space has been sold, with some returnees booking larger spaces. In addition, companies not currently exhibiting for TISE 2020 came to the sales office and inquired about booking for the following year ... a testament to the strength in attendance and the positive experience they gleaned from the show floor.

Craig Conover, cast member of Bravo’s reality show Southern Charm, appeared at TISE 2020 spreading his self-deprecating charm and showcasing his pillow designs at the show’s Style Hub.
Pillows with flamingo designs from the 6-foot-3 Southerner’s Sewing Down South lifestyle brand were featured in one of the four style pods, which were created by interior designer Jennifer Farrell to present interior trends.
Since the online launch of his brand in 2019, Conover has been throwing pillow parties at retail stores in the Mid-Atlantic to present his designs to the public. The designer says he was introduced to sewing in a home economics class he took at school in his home state of Delaware, and loved it. His brand includes not only pillows but totes, tee shirts and hats, and in 2020 he is considering expanding into kitchen soft goods.
Conover’s sewing prowess and pillow launch have been part of the continuing storyline on Southern Charm, where he has been both teased and encouraged by his castmates, and at one point he corralled them into helping him sew and stuff pillows for his line.
The National Installer of the Year Installation Competition (The Nationals) returned LIVE on the floor at TISE 2020. A panel of judges reviewed project submissions from around the country and selected the top three finalists in the categories Carpet, Stone/Tile, and Resilient to compete.
Competitors took a written exam, then were given a work order that they had to execute live in two 8-hour working days on the floor. The judging panel bestowed the awards on the show's final day.
Carrying away the top prize in their categories were John Fowler for Stone/Tile; Mike Adkins for Carpet; and Daniel Gonzales for Resilient flooring.
On his Facebook page post-win, Fowler, owner of John Fowler Designs of Fleming Island, FI, called the event lots of fun, commenting, "It's one thing to be watched by your client, but we had a minimum of 1,500 people come by to watch us." A bit nerve-wracking, maybe, but the attention obviously didn't faze Fowler or his fellow competitors. Adkins, owner of Adkins Flooring in Cordova, MD, who like both of his fellow winners, has 20 years' experience in installation, called the competition tough, and in a Facebook posting congratulated his competitors, writing that they did a great job. "I'm happy to be part of this industry," he said. Resilient flooring category winner Gonzales, a partner at Preferred Flooring MI in Grand Rapids, MI, also gave a shout-out to his fellow competitors and judges: "As you all know, the competition would not exist if not for those willing to put it all on the line and be judged and do the judging.
"The live event attracted a lot attention from showgoers, who returned time and again to the competition site to watch competitors showcase their skills and put their talents to the test.
The National Installers of the Year received a prize package, and now own well-deserved bragging rights in the industry and with their customers.
A panel of judges criss-crossed the show floor to pick three products as “Best Of” from among the Top 10 nominees that had been voted on by the industry and attendees. Mohawk, Tyrolit and Iris U.S. won for SURFACES, StonExpo Marmomac, and TileExpo, respectively. The awards' official publication sponsors are Floor Trends, Contemporary Stone & Tile Design, Stone World, Floor Covering Installer, and TILE Magazine.
The Best Of Event Awards is an annual awards program for exhibiting companies whose product, program, service, business practice and/or booth design are considered to be “Best Of” in their class.
For Surfaces, Provenza took the award for Technology; Mannington for Style & Design; Wickham for Small Booth Design; Daltile for Large Booth Design; and Raskin for Innovation.
For StonExpo Marmomac, both Mohawk and Coldspring took home awards for Sustainability; CZN Tech won for Technology; VM Kaldorf captured the award for Style & Design; while Park Industries won for Large Booth Design; and No Lift Install took the prize for Innovation.
Best of Event award winners for TileExpo were DryTile, winning for Sustainability; SawMaster, capturing the prize for Technology; Mediterranea, taking the award for Style & Design; and Bostik, winning for Innovation.
The Best Of Event Awards winners for each show (SURFACES, StonExpo Marmomac, and TileExpo) are determined by a panel of judges appointed by the official publication sponsors: Floor Covering News, Stone World, and TILE Magazine. The winners in the event categories Best Booth, Innovation, Style & Design, Sustainability, and Technology were announced and awarded right on the show floor.
Attendees gathering for StonExpo/Marmomac at The International Surface Event this January will find that the Natural Stone Pavilion, which debuted on the floor at TISE 2020, has tripled in size, offering attendees far greater access to stone suppliers, all in one space.
Anchoring the Pavilion are booths for the Natural Stone Institute and the Natural Stone Council. “We are growing the presence of natural stone suppliers at the the show, and delighted to see this growth at StonExpo,” says NSI CEO Jim Hieb. “Last year we brought in 18 stone companies, and this year we have increased the size of the booth threefold. Fifty-plus folks are exhibiting. People coming know that they can source with their natural stone only suppliers,” he says.
While StonExpo/Marmomac has long been known as the place to come for stone, tooling, and equipment, there wasn’t a dedicated spot for only natural stone suppliers to exhibit together, Hieb says. That lack sparked the the idea to convert the current TISE stone pavilion on the floor to a natural stone focus where producers and quarriers could exhibit as well, he says. “This initiative is a great support program to the NSI’s Use Natural Stone Campaign.
"From all practical perspectives, the next largest stone show will be at TISE. We have set up a platform for [suppliers] to be successful,” Hieb says.

[Calhoun, Ga.] Mohawk announced its newly imagined 30,000-square-foot floor space at The International Surface Event (TISE) will feature innovative products, powerful storytelling and award-winning marketing programs designed to help retailers thrive in today’s increasingly competitive world of specialty retail. Visitors to the booth will experience product stories designed to capture a consumer’s interest and drive her into retail stores in search of the three most recognizable brands in the industry — Mohawk, Pergo and Karastan.

Mohawk is kicking off TISE 2020 with a VIP Karastan Better Than Nature Intended event on Monday night before the show opening. The company’s leadership team will host Karastan retailers to celebrate the integration of hard surface into the 90-year-old Karastan brand.

For the first time ever, Mohawk said it will be participating in Converge, TISE’s educational curriculum, by hosting a peer-to-peer panel that will include some of Mohawk’s Edge Council members. On Tuesday morning, these retailers will discuss popular industry topics and business challenges, as well as the creative solutions they are using to navigate them, the company said.
During the show, Mohawk said its space will be the hub where visitors can view a mix of new hard and soft surfaces.
Retail partners will be able to check out the latest SmartStrand lineup, which will include multiple new ColorMax styles and a new SmartStrand Silk merchandising system. According to the company, this new display features more than 40 of the best styles and is designed to attract the consumer and tell the complete product story — from astonishing softness to long-lasting durability.
As one of the world’s leading plastic bottle recyclers, Mohawk said is placing an emphasis on eco-friendly products. In total, Mohawk announced it has recycled more than 40 billion plastic bottles by repurposing them into fiber for carpet products such as EverStrand – which, on average, uses 63 reclaimed plastic bottles per square yard.
A new RevWood Select and RevWood Plus wing display holds 60-plus styles of wood without compromise, making shopping simpler for consumers. Additionally, Mohawk announced it will help retail partners drive traffic to their stores for these products along with SolidTech and SolidTech Plus with new waterproof flooring digital campaigns. The company said these campaigns will enable retailers to easily translate the benefits of several waterproof options to best meet their customers’ lifestyles.
To support Edge partners carrying Pergo Extreme, Mohawk will be introducing new marketing tools for the Pergo “Go Life” campaign to demonstrate the product’s extreme durability. These enhancements, along with a refreshed consumer-targeted program on Pergo.com, will expand brand awareness and product interest, the company said.
Along with its hard surface launch, Karastan will introduce new broadloom products, including wool and tailored loop collections.
Retail partners will also discover what’s new in Mohawk’s award-winning programs. Rather than making programs one size fits all, Mohawk said it continues to design them to be more dynamic and flexible to fit each retailer’s unique business needs.
At the booth, retailers will experience how Omnify makes it easy for them to use digital to drive more feet through the door for Mohawk flooring. Retailers can also explore Mohawk’s new digital local advertising campaigns for Edge partners that are designed to help drive more traffic. Along with these digital solutions, retailers can learn how Five Star provides a Mohawk branded shopping experience that simplifies the showroom to accelerate a consumer’s decision to buy.
According to the company, Mohawk’s booth experience will culminate at the Retail Showroom, an ideal specialty retail store layout featuring all of the latest in merchandising and product displays, including the highly anticipated new rug display and kiosk. The display will feature 100 of the most popular rug styles and colors, while the digital kiosk will extend the offering and provide even more choices, the company added.
“Every hard surface needs a rug. The International Surface Event (TISE): SURFACES | StonExpo/Marmomac | TileExpo welcomes Dana Hicks as the new Show Director for the event. After 19 years of service to the flooring, stone, and tile industry through events, promotions, sponsorships, and community involvement, TISE says goodbye to Amie (Gilmore) Gonzalez as she transitions the event to Hicks. The change comes as Informa Markets’ need for seasoned, show-leading professionals increases due to growth in large-scale events to the company’s event portfolio.
Hicks has a strong background in the events space with nearly 20+ years dedicated to the trade, previously serving for 10 years in hospitality and events with Marriott International, followed by 17 years in the tradeshow arena ending as the VP of Events for Informa Markets/Virgo where he led a top portfolio event in the food ingredient sector. His recent venture for the past two years was into the world of surface materials, working as a design consultant at Baker Bros in the Phoenix market, focusing on sales and fulfillment of all residential flooring - hardwood, LVP, laminate, tile, carpet and area rugs. Attendees at StonExpo/Marmomac at The International Surface Event (TISE) in January 2020 will notice more natural stone on display than ever before. A new Natural Stone Pavilion will debut prominently in the middle of the show floor. The pavilion is strategically positioned near the Natural Stone Institute and the Natural Stone Council booths and adjacent to the Marmomac International Pavilion, which will also include several natural stone suppliers.

Obra Blanca Expo (OB Expo), a new tradeshow of the Tile Council of North America (TCNA), has joined with Informa, the world's largest exhibition organization, to bring StonExpo to México. OB Expo with StonExpo Mexico will take place October 15–17, 2019, at Expo Santa Fe, México City.
Started in 1987, StonExpo is an international exhibition of marble, granite, and other natural stones, along with the latest trends in stone design and fabrication machinery. Certified Flooring Installers Association partners with Informa/The International Surface Event (TISE) to host the 1st Annual Build My Future: Flooring Edition event in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The event was held on April 23, 2019 at the Plano Event Center and welcomed all high school students from multiple school districts giving them the opportunity to participate in this one of a kind event.
In January 2018, the Floor Covering Leadership Council (FCLC) commissioned an independent research firm to conduct a multi-phase study to quantify the scope and severity of the lack of installation professionals on the flooring industry’s sustainability and growth. A Chicago-based research firm, The Blackstone Group Inc., was contracted to conduct the research, whose quantitative component focused on businesses that purchased workers’ services by engaging floor covering installers as direct employees and/or subcontractors in 2017. The study’s findings suggest, not only that the installation labor shortage is real, but that its financial impacts on the manufacturers, distributors, and retailers up the flooring supply chain impacts that include lost margins on products and labor, production inefficiencies, higher labor costs, and increased claims – are significantly greater than previously understood. According to the results of this research, over the next 10 years, to keep up with moderate growth within the flooring industry, approximately 180,000 installers must be recruited, trained and working in the industry. “CFI has been focused on the initiative of reaching the youth for the past 3 years. Not only to let them know that floor covering installation is a viable opportunity for them, but in most cases, it is also a very profitable one without the college debt”, explains Robert Varden, Vice President of CFI.
The purpose of the Build My Future: Flooring Edition event was to introduce and educate students to the flooring industry and bring awareness to the different roles, which can be career opportunities as a flooring installation professional. A position in the flooring industry would provide a future for them and their families.
Connecting with local high school students and inviting them to come and “test drive” a day on the job, as a flooring professional, is something which doesn’t exist in the flooring industry, nor in the construction industry. CFI was lucky enough to be involved with the original Build My Future program, which takes place in Springfield, MO each year. This event consists of the entire construction industry coming together to showcase a career day for local high school students. After participating in this event CFI was encouraged to have their own Build My Future: Flooring Edition event in their home town of Dallas, TX. CFI has an extremely knowledgeable team of dedicated instructors who showcased the ins and outs of what they do on a day-to-day basis, which made this event a lot more informative and fun. The Build My Future: Flooring Edition is nothing like the average job fair: CFI offered hands-on demos, competitions and prizes donated by our sponsors and supporters.
With an amazing turn out from local school districts, young male and female students participated, and were blown away by the interactive showcase. “This is the best field trip I have ever been on and lunch hasn’t even been served yet”, exclaimed one of the students. The students came in open-minded and left with a totally new perspective of the flooring positions within their areas, some even left with job applications from local retailers who were in attendance. CFI and Informa will be giving one lucky student, who attended the event, a fully paid 5-week introduction to our residential carpet course which can be taken during summer break.

This year’s market was a discovery for all the senses across the entire exhibit hall. The benefit of attending live markets is to experience the products first-hand and to meet directly with the key people who produce them. Exhibiting brands at TISE 2019 ensured the industry could experience their products directly in live demonstrations within their exhibit spaces, as well as, on the Product Demo Stage at The Design + Installation Showcase Hub (The DISH), right on the show floor. THE INSPIRATION + DISCOVERY
Many industry veterans attend TISE knowing exactly what they are searching for. Others attend for the first time desiring to see everything the industry has to offer. Both groups leave the event having learned or seen something new and unexpected because the vast TISE market is a place of discovery and inspiration. Iconic brands launch new product lines while new companies move into the marketplace presenting exciting innovation for the industry. A new trend discovered at TISE 2019 pertained to innovation in the ease of installation for floors, walls, backsplashes. One new exhibitor, Cal-Flor Accessory Systems, featured their OMUR On the Wall, a unique and innovative wall mount system which allows mounting of click floors on the wall. In addition, emerging for the second year is an expansion in magnetic installation products as seen by Intelli-Force Magnetix and Magnetic Building Solutions, a magnetic backing and base underlayment that adheres wood, stone, and tile to nearly any commercial and residential surface.
TREND SPOTTING + CELEBRITYDESIGNER APPEARANCES
Throughout the days of TISE 2019, the show floor had pop up events featuring such trend-spotting, celebrity designers as Chip Wade, Jennifer Farrell, Christopher Grubb, and Allison Eden - just to name a few. In addition, TISE hosted design influencers covering the floor for the greatest, hot new finds while Scarlet Opus presented design trends for 2019 and beyond at the Design Stage at The DISH. Each of these unique individuals offered their insights into trends they are seeing in the industry from color to patterns, material sizes, and more, all while highlighting their unique finds and perspectives at TISE 2019. “I absolutely love SURFACES,” says Allison Eden of Allison Eden Studios. “I’m like a nerd in a candy land. My favorite things that I saw were Laticrete’s translucent SpectraLOCK because I do a lot of backlit pieces, it’s a grout and you can add glitter. From the show floor to across Las Vegas, the industry created buzz at TISE with events from awards presentations to networking happy hours, annual meetings and sales meetings, to a VIP bash on the show floor by the Mohawk brands featuring the surprise appearance by The Band, Perry. Some brands took the opportunity to give back to the community while they were gathered at TISE such as Tarkett who pulled together its own Light the Night team during the Tarkett Residential sales meeting to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), raising $11,765 in less than a month to support the cause of battling the complex disease that is blood cancer.
TISE launched a brand-new education program called CONVERGE at this year’s event. Industry leaders covered the hard-hitting, on-point topics such as The 411 on 4:20: Medical Marijuana and the Work Place and What to Expect in Washington DC After the 2018 Elections, technically crucial topics such as Moisture Mitigation Roundtable and The Ways of Water: Critical Considerations for Shower Construction, and design-centric, forecasting sessions such as Color Vibes: A Journey Through Color and Trends and The Power of 5: The 5 Hottest Trends in Flooring & The 5 Types of People Buying Them. The program was led by experts from inside the industry with conversation by veterans, Jon Namba, Lisbeth Calandrino, and Katie Ford to name a few, as well as experts outside the industry such as Attorney Jeff King and social media specialist Shannon Vogel. Each influencer brought their own unique perspectives and vault of information to provide value to each CONVERGE attendee. Thought in it’s first year, TISE plans to grow, adjust, and improve the program ongoing to ensure it meets the education needs of the industry.

CEO, Michael Raskin, discusses a specific 6 x 36, registered embossed, mosaic wood pattern piece and explains that each piece has different types of graining that all follow the grain which enhances the unique look. With DIXIE FLOORING, it was not one specific product collection or launch that was most exciting for 2019, but the color story, the style, and the fashion in their Dixie Home, Masland and Fabrica lines. MEASURE SQUARE showed a field rep solution where estimators can go on-site, use a laser, measure out a room, then use the technology to capture those spaces, drag and drop their products into the room, and build an estimate. The best part about this solution is the reports where the estimator can produce a signed proposal on-site. It’s profile and construction floats over your existing floors, is available in over 40 SKUs, and is available in both high gloss and de-lustered looks. CONGOLEUM at TISE 2019 was all about Cleo Home, winner of the 2018 Best of SURFACES Sustainability Award. This product is all about the construction: patented, very eco-forward, domestically sourced and produced, and in combinations that mix things in entirely different ways than any other product in the market. DUCHATEAU released 18 new products at TISE 2019. One of the new products, Golden Eye, has an extraordinary beautiful warm brown with a charred underlay. This product takes 17 hand steps to create the look and finish. These floors are more beautiful as they age because the wood is being naturally enhanced due to the tannins. DALTILE saw an increase last year in the interest in dark interiors: dark furniture, dark paint, dark cabinets. These trends were the inspiration for their three new product lines, one of which was prominently featured in a sexy, cool display at TISE 2019: Geometric Fusion.
